Fairy Creek (Ada'itsx) is one of the few remaining old growth forests on Vancouver Island. Rich in biodiversity, British Columbia’s old growth forests offer one of the last lines of defense against climate change, yet mismanagement, logging, and greed have left only a small percentage of them standing. An indigenous led movement to prevent the cutting of this last Old Growth watershed has now become Canada's largest act of civil disobedience, and the government response has been alarming. The publicly funded Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) work to aggressively disband and arrest the peaceful protesters blocking industry access to these ancient forests, despite numerous political conservation commitments to protecting the old growth forests of B.C. 

Rematriation follows the concerned citizens exploring the scientific, cultural, economic, and sociopolitical perspectives that come together in defence of the last big trees.

A story about immigration, family, and the comfort of nature. After struggling with poverty and homesickness when he first arrived in Toronto in the 1950s after immigrating from Jamaica, Pappy’s one connection to home was his love of gardening.

DIRECTOR BIOS

Alexi Liotti

Alexi's filmmaking experience ranges from working on music videos, television series, narrative features, commercials and short to feature length documentary films as a DP, camera operator, lighting technician and a drone operator. His work can be seen online, on television and at festivals, including Netflix and Sundance Institute's co//lab. Alexi’s insatiable passion for visual storytelling and social and environmental justice have led him to the directing of his debut feature documentary film, Rematriation - bringing him new accomplishments in directing, cinematography and producing. Alexi holds a BA, and a diploma with honours distinction from Capilano University’s documentary film program. He has recently founded his Vancouver based production company, Kincentric Cinema.

Mikaela Roberts

Mikaela is a 24-year-old Toronto-born filmmaker who grew up in Basel, Switzerland, before moving back to Canada to pursue her university studies. She graduated with a BFA in Film Production from Concordia University’s Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema in Montréal, QC. She is currently completing an Ontario College Diploma in Interactive Media Design from Algonquin College in Ottawa, ON. She works on both personal documentary projects and freelance film and photography projects.
